Graft Choice & Knee Preservation
Every ACL Injury is Different
An ACL reconstruction is not a single operation-it is a series of treatment decisions that should be tailored to each patient’s injury, anatomy, sporting goals and individual risk factors.
Every patient I see in Perth and Dunsborough undergoes a comprehensive assessment that considers:
- Age
- Sport and level of competition
- Anatomy
- Associated meniscal or cartilage injury
- Previous surgery
- Occupation
- Generalised ligament laxity
- Recognised risk factors for reinjury
This assessment helps determine not only whether surgery is appropriate, but also the most suitable reconstruction technique and graft choice.
Depending on these factors, I may recommend a specific graft tailored you:
- Patellar tendon autograft
- Hamstring tendon autograft
- Quadriceps tendon autograft
- Peroneus longus tendon autograft
Allograft
Additional procedures may also be recommended where appropriate to improve knee stability and reduce the risk of future graft failure.
Caring for Athletes in Perth at Every Level
My practice is dedicated exclusively to sports surgery, with particular expertise in:
- ACL reconstruction
- Complex knee ligament injuries
- Knee preservation surgery
- Meniscal surgery
- Cartilage restoration
- Osteotomy
Over many years I have had the privilege of caring for athletes competing at the highest levels of Australian and international sport. Those experiences continue to shape my practice today, but the same principles of careful assessment, evidence-based decision making and meticulous surgery apply equally to every patient, regardless of whether they compete professionally, on weekends or simply wish to remain active.
Particular areas of interest include:
- High-demand and elite athletes
- Adolescent ACL injuries
- Revision ACL reconstruction
- Multiple ligament knee injuries
- Patients at increased risk of reinjury
My role is to help you understand these options, explain the evidence behind them and work with you to develop a treatment plan that reflects your goals and circumstances.
Whether your aim is returning to elite competition, weekend sport or simply remaining active with family and friends, the focus remains the same: providing thoughtful, personalised care that gives your knee the best opportunity for a successful recovery and long-term health.
Looking Beyond the ACL - Knee Preservation
Successful treatment involves far more than reconstructing a torn ligament.
A major focus of my practice is preserving the long-term health of the knee by restoring normal biomechanics and preserving native tissue whenever possible.
This includes:
- Complex meniscal repair
- Blood/Fibrin clot augmentation
- Meniscal transplantation
- Cartilage restoration
- Cartilage transplantation
- Corrective osteotomy
The aim is not simply to repair today’s injury, but to help protect your knee for many years to come.
